Carlsen Baltic Unveils All-Electric Refrigerated Body for Electric Chassis
15th January, 2018
Carlsen Baltic, the leading converter for light commercial refrigerated vehicles, has designed and produced a 100% electric refrigerated body for MatHem, the leading e-commerce and home delivery company in Sweden. The official launch of this solution coupled with all-electric chassis is the first of its kind in Northern Europe and is a joint achievement of a group of companies including AL-KO, ABT, Volkswagen, and Carlsen Baltic.
The solution by Carlsen Baltic features an all-electric cooling system, which runs on lithium and/or solar batteries. This allows the body to be mounted on a fully electric chassis, making the vehicle 100% electric.
Batteries allow the cooling system to operate on demand, eliminating the need to run vehicle engine to produce cold, which is the biggest disadvantage of most conventional systems. The solution will help MatHem reduce the environmental impact of its fleet since there is no additional fuel consumption or related emissions from a refrigeration unit engine. On-demand operation mode also allows to get higher temperature stability inside the refrigerated body, ensuring the quality of goods delivered.
Even though lithium batteries provide enough energy for the entire shift, solar panels were mounted on the roof of the vehicle to make it even more sustainable. On a sunny summer day, the panels supply enough power to run the cooling system, leaving lithium batteries as a backup solution. The body also features a 360-degree camera, automatic doors, temperature and battery monitoring system, and many other facilities, enabling safe and comfortable operation under urban conditions.
The configuration results from a close cooperation with the customer to develop an efficient, comfortable, and eco-friendly solution for urban distribution. We are very proud of this project and the partnership that we have developed with MatHem, Volkswagen, AL-KO, and ABT. We believe that this joint project is a significant start in setting a new standard of sustainable urban deliveries in Sweden and beyond.
